Paul Herbert Johnson (UW Actuarial sciences) • Interested in a STEM field that uses data analytics to solve business problems? Then consider a career as an actuary! Actuaries are business professionals who identify, quantify, and manage an organization’s financial, strategic, and operational risks. Actuaries are essentially professional problem solvers, using mathematical concepts and historical data to help predict the future and design solutions. The actuarial profession itself is consistently rated as a top profession, with a strong job market. This talk will provide an overview of the actuarial profession including the characteristics and functions of actuaries, actuarial practice areas, and steps to become an actuary. There will also be a chance for the audience to ask follow up and clarification questions. The STEM Center’s vision is to be the access point for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) exploration, inspiration and collaboration.
