Friday,December 6, 2013, 3:30 PM, Room A2012 Professor John Frohliger, St. Norbert College Previous Lectures: "The Shortest Distance is Along a Straight Line, Even When It's Not", "Pythagorean Triples: Where Do They Come From?", "The Golden Ratio", "Finding the Odd Weight", "Worms, Blocks, and Harmony", "Honey, Where Shall We Sit?" and "One Potato, Two Potato, ..." In 1993, Virgin Games released The Seventh Guest. It was a computer game in which the player moved through a spooky house, going from room to room solving puzzles. Many of these puzzles involved mathematical concepts, some of them fairly deep. While the technical aspects of The Seventh Guest—which were considered cutting edge at the time—may be dated by today’s standards, the brainteasers are still fascinating. In this talk we will explore some of those puzzles and the underlying mathematics. Professor John A. Frohliger of St. Norbert College has been an Associate Professor of Mathematics at St. Norbert College since 1983. He received his B.A. from Indiana University and M.S. and Ph.D. from Purdue University. He has served as the Wisconsin coordinator of the American High School Mathematics Examination (AHSME), 1987-92, the Chair of the Wisconsin Section of the MAA 1998-1999 and a Reader for the AP calculus exam since 2000. The MATC Mathematics Club sponsors a lecture series every semester.
