Sums of Consecutive Odd Numbers - Lecture # 129

Friday, October 18, 3:30 PM, Room A2012 Professor Professor Norb Kuenzi, UW-Oshkosh Which positive integers can be written as a sum of consecutive odd numbers? We will explore this question and see if we can find some interesting results. Perhaps, we will find some conjectures to explore, we may prove some conjectures, we may find easy problems and hard problems. Biography: Norbert J. Kuenzi Professor Ph.D. (1969); University of Iowa Research Interest: Probability. Previous Lectures: (The Birthday Problem and Beyond) , (A Historical Look at the Car-and-Goats Problem)(#85 What are Trapezoidal Numbers?)(#74 "The Tower of Hanoi Puzzle"), (#7"Some Binary Curiosities") , (#43"How many Coconuts?--The Famous Monkey, Sailors, and Coconuts Problem") , (#63"Some (Sum) Numerical Curiosities for 2007"), (#16 "Two men thinking about math recreations") The MATC Mathematics Club sponsors a lecture series every semester. Speakers come from outside the school to provide us with insight into their research or mathematical curiosities they have discovered. Questions? Contact Jeganathan Sriskandarajah at (608) 243-4316.
