Professor John Koker, Dean A&S, UW-O This talk will explore the mathematics of barcodes and check digits with an emphasis on zip codes and the USPS Intelligent Mail® barcode. John Koker is currently Dean of the College of Letters and Science and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. He has been a member of the UW Oshkosh faculty since 1991. He served as chair of the Department of Mathematics from fall 2000 until his appointment as Dean in July 2006. He received a 2002 UW Oshkosh Distinguished Teaching Award and was named a 2004 UW Oshkosh Rosebush Professor for excellence in teaching, scholarship and service. In 2006, he won the UW System Board of Regents Teaching Excellence Award. John received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, an M.S. from Purdue University and a B.A. from St. Norbert College. During the spring of 1999 he was on sabbatical as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Mathematics Education at Kyungpook National University in Taegu, South Korea. The MATC Mathematics Club sponsors a lecture series every semester.
